ITAR Compliance Overview

The International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) is a U.S. government regulation that controls the export, handling, and storage of defense-related articles, technical data, and services. It covers companies that produce, export, or manage controlled defense information, and has a focus in particular on stopping unauthorized access, disclosure, or transfer of information, particularly to foreign nationals.

Why It Matters

ITAR plays an essential role in preserving national security and preventing misuse of sensitive defense information. Not adhering will bring serious consequences, including substantial fines, loss of export privileges, and even criminal liability. Security and data access systems must be strong if an organization is to avoid exposure to regulatory risk, as well as keep the trust of its government partners.

Core Focus Areas

ITAR focuses on controlling access to regulated technical data, limiting sharing based on nationality, and secure access and storage of controlled information. Organizations are supposed to put in place stringent access control plans that follow guidelines of security in place for access control, keep track of the flow of data, make records of these steps taken in complying with ITAR, and confirm that third-party vendors satisfy the same requirements as well.

Next Steps

In the light of ITAR compliance metrics, organizations may also include identifying where controlled data is stored, reinforcing access and monitoring controls, and establishing uniform security policies between systems and users in reviews of their ITAR compliance. With clear documentation and continued oversight, compliance will last over time.
