CDMC Compliance Overview

The Cloud Data Management Capabilities (CDMC) framework developed by the EDM Council provides practitioners with a framework to manage their organization's data safely and responsibly while using cloud. It combines guidance on governance, security, architecture, and operations and allows teams to be better informed about how cloud data will be managed and leveraged organization-wide.

Why It Matters

As cloud is adopted, data environments are increasingly dispersed and hard to manage. CDMC allows organizations to add organizational structure to the cloud and ensure consistency by minimizing operational risk and supporting regulatory, security, and business needs in cloud data management. CDMC is not mandatory, but it is widely used as a trusted reference framework, especially within the realm of finance, among others, where data-heavy businesses operate.

Core Focus Areas

CDMC focuses on key cloud data capabilities, such as governance and accountability, data architecture, security controls, metadata management, and daily operational processes. The objective is that data continues to be accurate, secured, and well-managed all along its lifecycle in the cloud, defined by ownership and repeatability.

Next Steps

Companies which try to implement CDMC or try to learn more about how their environment provides great visibility into their cloud data often will seek to develop better cloud governance models and enforce security controls that are consistent with the best practices that already exist for the management of cloud data.
